Got A Slope? 2 Ways You Can Still Have Beautiful Landscaping
If you have a slope on your property, you may think you are out of luck when it comes to landscaping. This is not true, however, and there are many different ways you can still have beautiful landscaping. Keep reading to learn about two of these ways so your home will really stand out in your neighborhood.
Add a Retaining Wall
The main purpose of a retaining wall is to hold back earth. For example, if you have bare soil on a slope, every time it rains this soil would run down the slope and into your yard which prevents you from planting beautiful flowers and other plants. If you install a retaining wall, the soil would not be able to get onto your landscaping.
You can use a variety of materials for a retaining wall, such as stone, brick, concrete, and wood. You can choose to build it any height you want, but you should be aware that certain heights will require a building permit. What this height is depends on where you live. Hire someone to build the retaining wall for you to ensure it is done properly. They will also know the laws of your state so you will be sure to meet requirements.
Once the retaining wall is in place, you can decorate it if you prefer. For example, put some pots of trailing flowers on top of the wall. You could also use a trellis on the bottom and plant some beautiful climbing roses.
Use Ground Cover
If you do not have a large slope in your yard, you can use ground cover to control the soil. This is because the roots from the ground cover acts like an anchor in the soil to stop the soil from moving. Some groundcover that is well-rooted and grows in sunny areas includes:
- Rosmarinus is a fast growing, spreading shrub and is fragrant and attracts bees.
- Myoporum parvifolium is a fast growing shrub that blooms in spring with white or pink flowers.
- Baccharis pilularis, also known as dwarf coyote bush, is an evergreen that requires little maintenance and is long-lived.
If your slope is in a shady area some plants that would work great for you include:
- Fragaria chiloensis is a shrub with white flowers that bloom from spring through summer.
- Pachysandra terminalis, also known as green carpet, grows slowly but once it covers the ground it lives for a very long time. It has beautiful white flowers that blooms in the spring.
- Arctostaphylos, also known as emerald carpet, has small, white flowers and blooms during the cooler months of fall through spring. When it sops blooming it has small red berries.
