Have You Bought an Abandoned House? How to Treat the Pests

Have you purchased a home that hasn't been lived in for months, and you fear there are pest problems both inside and outside around the property? If so, there are a few things you'll want to consider doing so you don't have to worry about insects or rodents after you move into the house.

Pests can be health hazards, they can damage the structure of the home, and they can be an annoyance. Have a pest control company come to your property to assess the following.

Interior Pest Treatment

Have the pest control agent treat the house for all insects to make sure that there aren't insects living inside the following places:

  • The ventilation system and HVAC appliances
  • The interior walls throughout the house
  • All bathroom and kitchen cupboards
  • Basement and attic

Once all of these areas have been targeted and treated, along with the open areas, you can move your items in without worry that there are pests or nests lingering where you can't see.

Exterior Pest Removal

If you have nests along the outside of your home for ants, spiders, bees and other insects, these insects could end up inside your home. If the grass was overgrown around the property while no one lived inside, this could also attract larger pests like raccoons and other rodents. The exterior needs treatment, especially in these areas:

  • Under patios or stairs
  • Around mulch and wooden fixtures
  • Along gutters

Have the exterior assessed and ask the pest control company how many exterior treatments will be needed to eliminate pest problems.

Prevention

A pest company like Campbell's Pest Control and Landscaping will offer to do a prevention inspection while or before treating the property. This should let you see where the pests can gain access to your home, where there are stuctures that have to be repaired to stop further intrusion, and how you can make the house more pest proof.

An abandoned house can become a breeding ground for pests if there is no one in there to stop the problem, and if there was moisture or waste inside of the home. You want to have the pest control company treat the spaces before you start to bring in your bedding, furniture, clothes and other items, so the pests don't have new places to hide as you place your stuff around the house. Get a few estimates and make sure to treat the interior and exterior.
