If you have a hillside on your property and are having erosion problems, you need to take steps to take care of this or you will have problems. Fortunately, there are many ways you can control erosion, five of which are listed below. 

Buffer Strips

One option of erosion control is using buffer strips, which can help control any running water on the property as well as take care of loose soil. There is perennial vegetation planted on the strips. The vegetation that is used will be determined by where you live so they will grow well. These are often used on farms but can also be used in other places. The strips are planted between your property and the waterway that is causing erosion.   

Windbreak

Another type of erosion control is called a windbreak. These work just like buffer strips, but instead of vegetation, trees and bushes are used. Again, the type that is used is determined by where you live. How many rows of trees or bushes that are planted will depend on how bad you are having erosion problems. 

Mulch

There is mulch made of natural materials or human-made materials. Mulch is beneficial as it will not only trap water but will also help control weeds. Natural mulch that you can use includes wood chips, straw, leaves, and much more. Human-made mulch is generally a plastic sheet that is laid on the soil. Holes are then poked through the sheeting to plant the vegetation plants.

Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding is planting plants that will prevent erosion. This works much like mulch, and you can combine both methods together. For example, plant the seedlings and then put a layer of mulch over the seedlings. You do have to be sure the seedlings are not covered by the mulch, or they will not grow. In many cases, it is best to wait until the seedlings grow tall enough. Hydroseeding is often used on hillsides where it is difficult to access if the hillside has a steep slope. 

Rocks

Rocks can be used to help with erosion problems. The rocks will be placed at the bottom of the hillside to stop the water. Rocks work well because they provide a good cover of the soil. Layers of rocks are generally used, putting smaller rocks on the bottom and larger rocks on top. This is because the larger rocks will prevent small rocks from falling away from the area.
